SPORT PSYCHOLOGY IN THE WORKPLACE

How can it be used in the workplace? 

Our research and uses for Sport and Performance Psychology can be compared to Industrial and Organizational Psychology, which is defined by the APA as “the study of behaviors that improve the environment, performance, communication, satisfaction, and safety of employees in the workplace.” Both fields of research acknowledge that in different aspects of our lives, people perform skills that can be optimized. Whether that is making sales calls, giving a presentation, closing a deal, working with a team on a project, or separating home and office life, there is a psychological component correlated to the success level. There are tools and applications within sport psychology that can help improve the mental performance of their employees which can lead to high efficiency, quick goal achievement, more passionate individuals, and stronger leaders.


Tools and Application 

We use stress management techniques (some as simple as learning how to breathe to thrive, not just survive) help with confidence, performance in high-pressure situations, and overall physical health in clients. We use personality assessments (such as the DISC) to give teams a common language to use and understand each others’ communication and conflict management styles. This improves leadership, goal achievement, team efficiency, and employee longevity. We also use leadership development programs to help individuals understand what they bring to the table and how to inspire others to accomplish common goals. From the team member who doesn’t understand their role, to the president of the company, knowing how to lead yourself and others has tangible benefits.

When we talk about what performance means in our daily lives, there are massive applications. It makes sense for the Sport and Performance Psychology theories and findings to be applied to all aspects of human performance, which is why the field has expanded to performance outside of sport.
